Environment:

• Orient Cement Limited considers itself responsible for Environment and Society. We are committed to emission reduction, climate protection, effective energy management, responsible use of resources and its conservation keeping in mind that “Today’s Need – Future of Our Children”.
• Our attempt to preserve the eco system has helped us fight the water scarcity problem at the plant. We have also developed the surrounding areas into a panoramic spot for a picnics/get-togethers. Yes, as a mandatory operation, we do excavate sites; however we make sure that we give back more than what we take from the environment. One such approach is the conversion of limestone mines into a huge lake called “Maisamma Sagar”.
• Our Devapur and Jalgaon Plants are dotted throughout with “Green Zones” and our residential quarters are decked up with tree lined avenues providing lovely, healthy and serene atmosphere.
• We are environmental enthusiasts and so we make the most of “Vanamahotsav” and observe “World Environment Day” by planting thousands of tree saplings with an avid gusto.

Climate Change Mitigation Initiative

Orient Cement Limited as a responsible corporate company have assessed the carbon footprint of their Devapur and Jalgaon plants for the period of 2015-16. We have published our performance voluntarily under the carbon disclosure project (CDP) and this will pave way for our future performance monitoring and evaluation.

Water Conservation

Water Conservation Awareness is emphasized by conducting discussions in meetings, addressing public gatherings, displaying posters on water conservation in all the plants and corporate office, distribution of water conservation stickers in residential colonies of the plant. This certainly ensures water conservation.

Water Conservation at Orient Cement Limestone Mines – A Sustainable approach

Water is a vital resource for life. On the world scenario, many areas are undergoing water supply and quality difficulties from groundwater as well as surface water sources. Water that meets consumable requirements for quality and quantity, is a critical need across the world with serious consequences for the environment, communities, industries and governments. There is an increasing concern at international, national and local levels as people begin to recognize the inherent value of water.

Water is a vital resource for life. On the world scenario, many areas are undergoing water supply and quality difficulties from groundwater as well as surface water sources. Water that meets consumable requirements for quality and quantity, is a critical need across the world with serious consequences for the environment, communities, industries and governments. There is an increasing concern at international, national and local levels as people begin to recognize the inherent value of water.

This huge reservoir/lake recharges the ground water table of surrounding areas and supports to the existence of local flora and fauna.

The surrounding area is lush green due to availability of water.

Many bird species can be seen in the area, using different habitats extensively for foraging, nesting and roosting in the surrounding vegetation. Water birds are generally at or near the top of most quarry water for food chains. They are highly susceptible to habitat disturbances and make for good indicators of general condition of aquatic habitats. The rich diversity of birds existing in the area, may be because of availability of water and food. Fish exist in the water reservoir maintaining an aquatic ecosystem.

This site appears like a picnic spot and attracts nature lovers and bird watchers.

Training and Campaign On Road Safety

We have started a the campaign this year for Road Safety – Defensive Driving. We have conducted various training programmes on Defensive Driving for employees at our Devapur Plant, Chittapur plant, Jalgaon plant and Hyderabad office.
We have observed Road Safety week between 20th January and 26th January 2016 for employees, their family members, school students, truck drivers,
details of which are pronounced below:
Awareness programme on Road Safety was organized for school children of Carmel Giri Convent High School along with a quiz competition. 1142 Children participated in this programme. Winners of the quiz competition were awarded prizes.
To propagate the message of Road Safety to all the Road Users in the society, we have sponsored Road Safety Week Propaganda Posters to Regional Transport Authority- Mancherial. These posters were launched in the Road Safety Week Inaugural function held by RTO Mancherial at RTO – Office, Mancherial.
A march past held in the plant and awareness programme on Road Safety was organized for all the contract supervisors. Supervisors are the first line of contact for all contract workers. This training programme was aimed at communicating the message to all the contract workers through their contract supervisors. They were advised to follow road safety rules to avoid accidents for themselves and others.
To inculcate road safety awareness amongst Truck Drivers working in our Mines, we organized an awareness programme at our Mines Office. 28 Drivers participated in this programme. Apart from this programme, during the campaign we have raised awareness to all the drivers through tool box talks. We have restricted unauthorized entry into mines area due to HEMM Movement.
Awareness programme on Road Safety was also organized for drivers of various transports at Safety Induction Centre in association with Circle Inspector of Police- Mandamarri & Inspector of Police- Devapur. 128 Truck drivers participated in this programme. Road Safety Pamphlets were distributed to all the truck drivers coming to the plant.
The whole campaign was also covered by the media.
Glimpses of Road Safety initiatives at Devapur Plant

• Damaged portion of the Roads in the plant and township repaired.
• RCC Roads constructed inplace of Kachha Roads ( 1.8 KM).
• Activity of Road Widening at sharp turnings taken up.
• Speed Limit (20 KMPH) Caution Boards displayed in the Plant premises.
• Speed Limit (30 KMPH) Caution Boards displayed in the Colony premises.
• 8 Speed breakers constructed at speed prone areas in addition to the existing ones.
• Engaged Road Sweeping machine to clean roads to ensure cleanliness.
• Animal removal drive from colony taken up to avoid unexpected movement of animals on the roads
• Observed 3 blind turns and arranged convex mirrors to provide visibility.
• Provided view mesh in the wall for ease of visibility of vehicles on the other side of the wall infront of ATM.
• Provided dividers on the roads to ensure vehicle movement in a disciplined way.
• Traffic Islands made near Bachelors hostel to regularize vehicle movement.
• Deploying Security guards daily during school hours to control traffic and ensure safe movement of children on roads.
• Improved street light illumination levels to ensure the visibility of pedestrians on the roads by replacing approximately 50 existing street lights.
• 12 Portable barriers with radium reflectors made available for use in case of traffic diversion.
• 50 Road Safety Cones made available for use on roads.
• Seat Belt usage made mandatory inside the plant premises.
• Thought provoking Road Safety Slogans displayed in truck yard.
• As per the advice of the President- Works- procured reflective radium to be fixed on road side and tail end of trucks. RTO- Mancherial also insisted for the same.
• Plans are on to provide some more speed breakers at speed prone areas as per the guidelines of Sub Inspector of Police- Devapur.
• Awareness programmes are carried out on regular basis for all the employees, drivers, school children and housewives.

Energy Policy

We, at Orient Cement Limited are committed to improvement of Energy efficiency and performance by using alternative fuels and by identification and reduction of energy losses by:

• Establishing a framework for setting energy objectives and targets
• Reviewing, monitoring and analysing Energy consumption.
• Conducting audits for improvement of overall Energy Efficiency of the plant,
• Purchasing equipment and appliances with consideration of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency Star Ratings and energy efficiency.
